The Doctor of Philosophy Program in Knowledge and Innovation Management (KIM), College of Arts, Media and Technology (CAMT), Chiang Mai University, successfully hosted a Comprehensive Examination titled “The Evolution of Knowledge Management: Origins · Debates · Futures” on 9 September 2026.

The session was presented by Jiaxing Liu (Lewis), a doctoral candidate in Knowledge and Innovation Management at CAMT. Drawing on his multidisciplinary background—an MBA and BEng in Civil Engineering from Guangxi University, together with published research in bamboo design, construction, and advances in bamboo science—Lewis explored how Knowledge Management (KM) has evolved over the past three decades.

💡 “How does knowledge move from one person’s head into something the organisation keeps?”
This foundational question guided an engaging academic discussion covering:
🔹 Origins & Tacit Knowledge: Michael Polanyi’s tacit dimension and Ikujiro Nonaka’s SECI model, which helped shape our understanding of organizational knowledge creation.
🔹 Knowledge as Stock and Flow: Two important perspectives on how knowledge is understood, retained, and shared within organizations.
🔹 Ongoing KM Debates: Critical reflections on the cultural context of SECI, the limits of tacit knowledge conversion, and codification versus personalisation.
🔹 AI & the Future of KM: How artificial intelligence is reshaping knowledge externalisation and combination, what remains uniquely human, and how organizations can retain and reuse knowledge over time.
